Hoy se conmemora, el aniversario 209, de la muerte «del Padre de la Patria», Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, el iniciador de la Guerra de Independencia, quien, al ser descubierta la conjura, tocó la campana de su Curato, en Dolores Gto. y convocó a sus feligreses a levantarse en armas, la madrugada del 16 de septiembre de 1810, después de 3 siglos de dominio español.

Cinco días después, el Capitán General de los Insurgentes, enarbolando el estandarte con la imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe, protectora de la insurgencia, tomó con su ejército las ciudades de, Celaya, Guanajuato y Valladolid, dirigiendose a la Capital del Virreinato. Hidalgo venció al ejército realista en la épica batalla de Monte de las Cruces, solo que en vez de avanzar a la Capital, se dirigió al Bajío, fueron alcanzados y derrotados en Aculco. Poco después los Insurgentes perdieron el control de las ciudades de Guanajuato y Valladolid, decidieron replegarse en Guadalajara, pero fueron enfrentados, vencidos y hechos prisioneros, en Puente de Calderón, por Félix María Calleja, enemigo acérrimo del movimiento independentista.

A 10 meses del inicio de la Guerra contra España, el Cura Hidalgo, fue fusilado en Chihuahua, el 30 de julio de 1811 y su cabeza estuvo expuesta, hasta el año de 1821, en la Alhóndiga de Granaditas.
