Un día como hoy, 13 de julio, pero del año de 1954, la gran pintora mexicana, con reconocimiento nacional e internacional, Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón, muere a los 47años de edad, de embolia pulmonar.
Hija de Don Guillermo Kahlo y Matilde Calderón, fue perseguida toda su vida por la tragedia y el infortunio, de niña se enfermó de poliomielitis, que le dejó grandes secuelas en una pierna y de jovencita, a sus 19 años, sufrió un grave accidente que le provocó múltiples heridas y fracturas en todo su cuerpo y la obligó a someterse a 32 intervenciones quirúrgicas, cuando ella, iba en un camión, que fue arrollado por un tranvía.
Su obra, consta de 150 pinturas, predominando los autorretratos, Frida, afirmaba que su obra, no era surrealista, sino que pintaba su propia vida. En 1939, expuso, en Francia y su cuadro, autorretrato «El Marco», fue la primera pintura mexicana, comprado por el museo de Louvre.
Vestida con su traje de Tehuana, la gran artista, fue cremada y en ese, su último momento, estuvo acompañada y despedida, con corridos y canciones de la Revolución, por grandes personalidades y amigos, Lázaro Cárdenas, David Alfaro Siqueiros y su esposo, Diego Rivera.
